Bugs, bugs, bugs

I love bugs, they are such an important part of our biodiversity. I’ve done a number of bug-based designs but this one is my favourite. I like the juxtaposition of the vibrant colours and the textured paper. These bugs are a mix of traditional and digital collage. The textures come from a selection of 1950’s Home and Garden […]

Feeling fruity

This fruity pattern mixes the freshness of a tropical punch with the spiciness of a bloody mary. With juicy oranges, punchy pineapples, and squishy ripe tomatoes.

Floral

This pattern explores floral imagery through the abstraction of shape and colour. Aiming to capture the freshness of a flower garden while embracing a contemporary aesthetic and style.

Landscape

The New Zealand forest landscape is the inspiration behind this pattern. A fern frond unfurling, trees growing, leaves expanding, seeds dropping to the ground, moss-covered rocks leading to stream beds.

Geometric shapes

This is a pattern designed as an experiment with geometric shapes. Interconnected linework and exploding edges are used to create a sense of energy and growth.

City of sails

This pattern uses the abstracted shape of the sail to capture the feeling of Auckland city. The mark making aims to reflect the cultural diversity and connectivity of our city of sail.

Boats

I drew this pattern after a research trip to the Maritime Museum in Auckland. I selected a range of hull shapes to represent a variety of boats on display.

Shake it off

I am loving a 90’s vibe at the moment. These dancing characters are grooving back to a time when pastels and neons were all the rage. I’m enjoying working with movement within flat vector shapes while also playing with geometric patterns and character design.

Birds, birds, birds…

Heres a selection of birds from my archives. I like pushing an illustration to its most simple form. Sometimes the result is more graphic and sometimes the result is more representational. I try to make shapes that work at a small size (such as an icon) but also look interesting when used at a large […]

24 shades of heart

Love comes in all different shades. This was something I played around with for valentines day. Are you in fluffy love or pirate love?

Fairies

This is what fairies would look like if I had my way. I like the idea of fairies having a global appeal. So that kids, teenagers, and adults can all enjoy them. Whenever I use pink I try to balance it out with blue staying away from gender colour stereotypes.

Graffiato in Taupo

This is a mural in Taupo. It was painted as part of the Graffiato festival held annually in October. It was based on a vector sketch that I did. I wanted to show a bunch of characters dancing, as I was listening to Shake it off  by Taylor Swift at the time. These guys are […]

Aeroplane book

How do you build an aeroplane when you’ve only got one wing? is a book I wrote and illustrated while my son was a baby. It is about two kids having to use their creativity to solve a problem. This is my second book, my first book How Absurd is going to be republished in […]

People

How do I draw people? I’m always mixing this up. I like the more graphic and simple ways to stylise a person. But sometimes adding a bit of humor and personality can be fun too.

Maps

What can I say… I like maps. I like looking at maps and I like drawing maps. It brings together my love of simplistic imagery and travel.

Home is where the cat is

This is an image that represents home to me. I think Gareth Morgan would like to live here too.

Starship Hospital Playroom

This playroom is in the emergency department at Starship Hospital. The room has a nautical theme based on a story by Tessa Duder. The walls are interactive and the ceiling is filled with hanging fish mobiles. We designed, painted and built the play room over a three month period. Our team was made up of […]

Rhythm and Vines

I painted these totems for Rhythm and Vines alongside my buddy Cinzah. The totems were then driven off in a green combi van to their new home.

Kooky characters

Here is a selection of kooky characters from my archives. Character design is something I enjoy. These designs were done for various creative projects. Clients included Spark, H2GO, Red Bull and Whizz Fizz.

Auckland Philharmonic

The flute and the violin are two instruments I know well. I learnt how to play both as a child and have had a fondness for them ever since. This was a fun job. I got to illustrate my two favourite instruments for the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.

Metro Mag

This was the cover for Metro’s Cheap Eats edition. It shows a map of Auckland with some of our favourite spots to eat. And while we are on the subject of Metro mag – here are some internal illustrations I did for a column about how to be a man – Drink craft beer and […]
